# Courses, cuisines, diets and keywords

Scrumptious has three ways to group recipes, plus free-form keywords.

| | Examples | Used for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Course** | Dessert, Dinner, Breakfast | Google (`recipeCategory`), Recipe Grid filters |
| **Cuisine** | Italian, Mexican, Thai | Google (`recipeCuisine`), Recipe Grid filters |
| **Diet** | Vegan, Gluten-free | Google (`suitableForDiet`, for the diets Google recognises), Recipe Grid filters |
| **Keywords** | weeknight, one-pot | Google (`keywords`) |

## Adding them

**Inside a post** (Recipe Card block): in the sidebar, open **Course, cuisine & diet**, type a name and press **Enter**. Add as many as you like. Start typing to pick an existing one; a name that doesn’t exist yet is created.

**On the recipe’s own screen**: use the **Courses**, **Cuisines** and **Diets** panels in the sidebar, like WordPress categories and tags.

**Keywords** are in the sidebar under **Details → Keywords**, separated by commas.

## Let AI suggest them

With [AI set up](https://scrumptiouswp.com/help/ai-setup/), Scrumptious can fill these in for you.

1. Add the recipe’s title and ingredients.
2. In the block sidebar, open **Course, cuisine & diet** and click **Suggest with AI**.
3. Suggestions show as buttons under **Course**, **Cuisine** and **Diet**. Click one to add it, or **Add all**. Ones marked **(new)** aren’t on your site yet; clicking them creates them.
4. Save the recipe as usual.

How it decides:

- It reuses your existing courses, cuisines and diets whenever one fits, so you don’t end up with *Main*, *Mains* and *Main dish*. Names that differ only in case, spaces, hyphens or a plural *s* count as the same, and so do diets Google treats as the same (*Plant-based* finds your *Vegan*).
- It suggests 1–2 courses, at most one cuisine, and up to three diets.
- Diets are only suggested when **every** ingredient fits. For example, a recipe with regular soy sauce isn’t suggested as gluten-free, and one with honey isn’t vegan. When unsure, it leaves the diet out.

> **Always check diets before you publish.** Readers with allergies and intolerances rely on them, and AI can still make mistakes.

**Also automatic:**

- **Paste & Parse with AI** fills in course, cuisine and diet along with the rest of the recipe. See [Paste & Parse](https://scrumptiouswp.com/help/paste-and-parse/).
- **Import from a link** (Scrumptious Pro) uses the page’s own course and cuisine. If the page doesn’t give one, and AI is set up, AI fills in the missing ones. See [Import from a link](https://scrumptiouswp.com/help/import-from-url/).

Each suggestion is one short AI request, billed by your provider like Paste & Parse (usually well under a cent). Without AI, the button is replaced by a **Set up AI** link.

## Managing the lists

Go to **Recipes → Courses**, **Recipes → Cuisines** or **Recipes → Diets** to add, rename or delete entries, just like post tags.

These lists are separate from your blog’s categories and tags, so recipe organisation doesn’t clutter your blog.

## Where they show

- In Google’s recipe data (course, cuisine, keywords, and diet).
- As filters in the [Recipe Grid block](https://scrumptiouswp.com/help/recipe-grid/) — e.g. a grid of *Dessert* recipes. Use a grid on a page to make a “Desserts” or “Vegan recipes” page.

Google recognises these diets: Diabetic, Gluten-free, Halal, Hindu, Kosher, Low-calorie, Low-fat, Low-lactose (or Lactose-free), Low-salt (or Low-sodium), Vegan (or Plant-based) and Vegetarian. Other diets (Keto, Paleo, Dairy-free…) work on your site and in grids but aren’t sent to Google, which has no value for them.

**Tip:** Keep courses broad (Dessert, Main, Side, Breakfast, Snack, Drink). Use keywords for specifics.
