# Recipe pages and the recipe index (optional)

By default, recipes live **inside your blog posts** and have no page of their own. That’s the classic food-blog setup: the post (with its story, photos and ads) is the recipe’s page.

Turn on **public recipe pages** if you also want:

- a page for every recipe, e.g. `yoursite.com/recipe/chewy-cookies/`, and
- a recipe index listing them all, e.g. `yoursite.com/recipes/`.

## Turning them on

1. Go to **Recipes → Settings → Recipe pages**.
2. Tick **Give every recipe its own page**.
3. Optionally change **Recipe URL base** (default `recipe`) and **Recipe index URL** (default `recipes`).
4. Choose whether to **Allow comments on recipe pages**.
5. Click **Save Changes**.

The link to your recipe index then appears under the setting (*Recipe index: …*). Permalinks are refreshed automatically.

**Important:** Changing the URL base on a live site changes every recipe page’s address. Set up redirects from the old URLs if pages are already indexed.

## How it affects SEO

With recipe pages on, **the recipe page is the main page for that recipe**:

- The recipe page is its own canonical URL.
- Google’s recipe data is output **only on the recipe page**, not on blog posts that also show the card. Google sees one recipe at one address.
- Recipe Grid links and the print page’s *Recipe from* line point to the recipe page.

Blog posts still show the full recipe card for readers.

With recipe pages off, the blog post is the recipe’s page and carries the recipe data.

See [Google recipe data](https://scrumptiouswp.com/help/google-recipe-data/).

## The templates

### Block themes (WordPress 6.7+)

Scrumptious adds two templates you can edit in **Appearance → Editor → Templates**:

- **Single Recipe** — featured image, title, then Recipe Part blocks: summary, rating, buttons, times, ingredients (40%) beside instructions (60%), notes, nutrition, and comments if allowed.
- **Recipe Index** — a grid of recipes (photo, title, rating), 12 per page, with page numbers.

They’re built from normal blocks and [Recipe Part blocks](https://scrumptiouswp.com/help/recipe-parts/), so you can move, remove or restyle anything. Use **Reset** in the Site Editor to go back to the original.

### Classic themes

Your theme’s usual single-post template is used, with the recipe card in the content area. The index uses your theme’s archive template. Theme developers can add `single-swp_recipe.php` and `archive-swp_recipe.php` for full control.

## Comments

**Allow comments on recipe pages** controls comments on recipe pages only. Comments on your blog posts follow your normal WordPress **Settings → Discussion**.

## Menus

When recipe pages are on, recipes can be added to menus (**Appearance → Menus**, or the Navigation block). Add a custom link to your recipe index URL for a “Recipes” menu item.

## Viewing a recipe

On **Recipes → All Recipes**, hover a recipe: **View** opens its page, and **View in “post name”** opens each post that shows it.
